Title

I am Chisato Hamashima, Professor of Teikyo University.
I am a chairwoman of the 59th General Meeting of the Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Cancer Screening, JDDW2021. It is a great honor for me to hold our conference collaborating with the JDDW.

The main theme of our conference is policy marking for cancer screening based on the balance of benefits and harms.

Evidence-based policy making has become an international standard, and this concept should also be adopted to cancer screening.

Considering balance of benefits and harms is a basic requirement of clinical practice guidelines. In cancer screening, we have to evaluate not only the benefits but also consider the harms. Thus, the final goal is maximizing true benefits for cancer screening based on balance of the benefits and harms.

The first issue of the symposium is the evaluation of technologies for cancer screening. During this symposium we will discuss how evidence for cancer screening has been established and following this will discuss how to evaluate the efficacy/effectiveness of new techniques for cancer screening. We wish to promote the evaluation of studies related to cancer screening which are held to international standards.

Following this, as a second issue, we will examine various harms found in programs and discuss action plans in order to minimize said harms.

In order to understand evidence-based health policy making, two famous researchers will be invited. Professor Anne Mackie, Director of Public Health England will focus on organized screening program in the UK. On the other hand, Professor Tony Chen, National Taiwan University will talk about the success story of COVID19 infection control in Taiwan.

We hope you will join us in the JDDW 2021 conference so that we may better discuss these topics together.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the JDDW 2021.
Thank you.
