As a result of remarkable progress of pharmacotherapy and the development of highly advanced surgical techniques, we are embarking on a new era of multidisciplinary approaches for distant metastases of colorectal cancer. We could list some modalities up such as molecular targeted drugs or triplet regimens to reduce tumor size or staged hepatectomy strategy with ALPPS for liver metastasis as representative ones heightening the value of multidisciplinary approaches. Nowadays, increasing number of patients are successfully treated with “conversion surgery” for initially unresectable diseases, whereas there are still a lot of clinical issues to be solved in this field, such as decreased organ function due to toxic chemotherapy regimens, uncertainty of optimal timing of surgical intervention, and the difficulty of predicting early relapse of disease. In this session, based on the clinical results of current multidisciplinary approaches, novel attempts to optimize the value of surgical treatment for colorectal distant metastases including liver metastasis, lung metastasis, and peritoneal dissemination will be discussed internationally.
