Barrett’s esophagus (BE), a premalignant condition of the esophagus, is increasingly prevalent. Ultimately, the clinical implication of BE lies in the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma. In Asia, although the prevalence of BE is generally considered low, with the growing influence of Western cultures, BE is certainly increasing. However, diagnostic criteria vary widely between studies across the world, and guidelines from various societies worldwide provide differing viewpoints and definitions. Consequently, endoscopic and histopathological criteria varied between studies, making it challenging to assess comparability between geographical regions. Compared to the United States, where the prevalence of BE is approximately 5.6%, this ranges widely from 0.06% to 43% and comprise mainly of short-segment BE in Asia. In this session, we would like to share the differences in BE diagnosis and aim for standardization. In addition, we are also looking for presentations on the risk of developing BE and risk factors for carcinogenesis.
