Backgrounds: Gastric emptying as well as esophageal motility is sometimes impaired in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). However, a relationship between dyspeptic symptoms and esophageal motility is not fully understood.
Methods: Medical records of 87 consecutive patients with SSc were reviewed. All patients underwent high resolution manometry and their symptoms were assessed using the modified frequency scales for the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (mFSSG).
Results: Total and dyspeptic scores in patients with absent contractility were significantly higher than those in patients with normal esophageal motility (p<0.05, Table). There was a significant correlation between reflux and dyspeptic scores (r=0.720, p<0.01).
Conclusions: There was a significant relationship between dyspeptic symptoms and esophageal motility in patients with SSc. It is important to manage their dyspeptic symptoms as well as reflux symptoms.
